PARIS - Andy Murray will draw on the experience of being a grand slam
champion and Ernests Gulbis will rely on his "unhealthy diet full of
ketchup" as they attempt to prevent a Rafa Nadal-Novak Djokovic final at
the French Open.
The last time Murray faced eight-time champion
Nadal at Roland Garros, in the 2011 semifinals, the Briton was still one
of the many also-rans on the tour.
Since then, however, the Scot
has captured the U.S. Open title and sent 60 million Britons into
delirium by winning Wimbledon last July.
That success has made
Murray believe he can pull off a feat achieved only once in the past
decade - beating Nadal in a best-of-five-set match on the Spaniard's
beloved red clay.
"I obviously know how to win these tournaments
now so hopefully that will give me a little bit more confidence and
belief when I go on the court on Friday," said the seventh seed who has
not won a title since that surreal July day in southwest London.
"I'll give 100 percent of what I've got on Friday and see how it goes."
Even that might not be enough against a man who hates leaving Roland Garros without taking a bite out of the Musketeers' Cup.
When
Robin Soderling designed the blueprint for beating Nadal at Roland
Garros in 2009, someone should have told him to copyright the plans and
sell it on the open market.
Had he done so, the Swede would have
had a bestseller on his hands but instead, more than five years later,
he astonishingly remains the only man to have beaten Nadal at the home
of claycourt tennis.
While most pundits are not convinced Murray
has the firepower to stop Nadal extending his French Open win-loss
record to 65-1 on Friday, the Spaniard refused to write off the Briton's
chances.
Big challenge
"He's a candidate
to win Roland Garros. It will be a big match and big challenge for me,"
the 28-year-old Nadal, who has won 14 of their 19 meetings, told a
disbelieving audience.
The only man considered to have the stamina, belief and weapons to finally knock Nadal off his lofty pedestal is Djokovic.
However,
the Serb first needs to show his ketchup-loving childhood friend Gulbis
that an indisciplined lifestyle does not lend itself to tennis success.
They
are both graduates of the Niki Pilic academy but while Djokovic was
always been a diligent student, Gulbis was more into enjoying the finer
things in life - which explains why the world number two owns six grand
slam titles and the Latvian's tally stands at zero.
"He was
always somebody that was very enthusiastic about everything in life, you
could see he wanted to enjoy it with open arms," grinned Djokovic as he
recalled their teenage years.
"He wasn't really committed to
work hard. But now that's changing for him. [In the last two rounds] he
has won against Roger [Federer], won against Tomas [Berdych].
"He
plays really well. He has a huge serve that if it goes in can give him a
lot of advantage over the opponent," added Djokovic.
"He's definitely going to be aggressive and going to go for his shots against me."
It
has taken Gulbis 27 attempts to finally make it into the last four of a
grand slam but in case fans thought he had given up the playboy
lifestyle for good, he was quick to point out that it was simply on
hold.
"I need to prove to myself that I can be the best that I
can be in tennis and then I'm going to have a clear and easy mind when
I'm 35 years old sitting on a beach with a ...," the 25-year-old said as
he pretended to take a sip out of an imaginary glass of champagne

Rwanda 'protecting M23 DR Congo rebels
The Democratic Republic of Congo has accused Rwanda of "protecting" M23 rebel leaders wanted for war crimes.
A government official told the BBC that seven months after the end of the rebellion, Rwanda was also delaying attempts to interview about 500 ex-fighters currently in a camp in Rwanda.
Some 800,000 people fled their homes in eastern DR Congo during the insurgency.
Rwanda has long denied that it supported the rebels and says it is co-operating with DR Congo's requests.
The M23 took up arms in eastern DR Congo in April 2012, accusing the government of marginalising the ethnic Tutsi minority and failing to honour previous peace accords.
Following their defeat at the hands of the Congolese army and a UN brigade in November 2013, former fighters gathered in camps in neighbouring Rwanda and Uganda.
It was surprisingly easy to find the camp in the town of Ngoma, in eastern Rwanda - far from the Congolese border.
When we arrived, dozens of young men were gripping onto the camp's fence - peering outside onto the road.
After more than a year in the camp, most of them say they are fed up with the wait, and want asylum in Rwanda. Despite DR Congo's offer of amnesty, they don't feel it is safe to return.
Inside, the camp looked quite neat and peaceful. A garden, a few red buildings and a stretch of large white tents, where the former rebels sleep in groups of six.
They cook for themselves in an outdoor kitchen. They only leave the camp to go see a doctor, but they are allowed to keep their mobile phones.
On the whole, it seems like a comfortable camp - certainly not a prison. Officials tell me more than 100 of them have run away since they arrived 15 months ago.
The group's former leader Jean Marie Runiga has no intention of leaving. Despite being accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity in DR Congo, he is requesting asylum in Rwanda. He is hosted in a house outside the camp, which he told me was very comfortable.
The subsequent peace accord stipulated that former fighters would be granted an amnesty on their return to DR Congo - and leaders of the group should be returned to face charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity.
But Francois Muamba, who works for DR Congo's government to ensure regional peace and security, has accused Rwanda of dragging its feet over these promises, to contrast to Uganda.
He said Rwanda was "protecting" four wanted M23 leaders, but DR Congo did not want to press the issue as it was "not looking for war" with its neighbour.
All four are under UN sanctions.
Attempts by Congolese officials to interview former fighters about their return to DR Congo had not been authorised by the Rwandan authorities, he said.
"I am speculating that this is because we will discover that about 70% of former combatants are Rwandan, not Congolese," Mr Muamba told the BBC.
"They could also be keeping these people as a means of pressure," he said.

Another Attack: Boko Haram Kills 9 During Church Service, Villagers Confront Insurgents
Barely 48 hours after suspected Boko Haram members murdered the Emir of Gwoza, Idris Titman,
they struck again on Sunday, June 1, attacking a church in Attagara,
Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State and killing nine worshippers. The insurgents who were said to have rode on motorcycles and a truck, stormed the EYN Church (Church of Brethren, Nigeria) at about 9.30am and opened fire on the members, killing 9 people and leaving many with injuries.
Matthew Adamu, a resident of the village who fled to Maiduguri, said, "Our church has some men who provide security, especially when service is going on. As we were holding our service on Sunday, we started hearing gunshots and everybody fled. Some jumped through the windows and ran into the bushes. Some who live close to the church managed to run to their homes."
According to an unnamed police source, who confirmed the killings to journalists, the villagers and their neighbours from Agapalwa then mobilised and went after the insurgents, killing about 37 of them in a reprisal attack while they arrested three of them.
Also confirming the incident, the Chairman of the Christians Association of Nigeria in the state, Rev. Titus Pona said, he was told by his members that 37 of the insurgents were killed in the reprisal attack.
It was gathered that the Sunday attack, was a revenge attack by the Boko Haram gunmen who were angered by the arrest of some of their members the previous day in Gwoza town.
Attempts to get official confirmation from police and military authorities proved abortive as the mobile telephone lines of their spokesmen were unavailable.
However, a security source at the Department of the State Security, SSS, confirmed the incident off the record to journalist.
“Gwoza is boiling presently because the incident is taking a dimension that may spark religious strife amongst the Muslim-Christian community in the Gwoza neighborhood”, said the security source.
Despite troops of military men and emergency rule in the state, Boko Haram have continued to attack various Borno communities, from kidnapping over 200 Government school girls in Chibok on April 14, to killing over 300 people in an attack on May 7 and displacing countless others from their home in different attacks.
Infuriated by the incessant attacks on their community, some women in Attagara and Kawuri villages in Gwoza and Bama Local Government areas of Borno State, on May 26, Monday were said to have repelled attacks on their community the dreaded insurgents who had stormed the village on motorcycleshttp://news.naij.com/67470.html

Fed Govt saves N457.96bn from contract frauds
The Federal Government has saved an
estimated total of N457.96 billion from checking contract frauds through
its procurement reforms in the past two years.
This was contained in the 98-page
Transformation Agenda: Review Progress report for the period 2013 to
2014 presented to the public by President Goodluck Jonathan as part of
activity marking the 2014 Democracy Day celebration in Abuja.
The report, which highlighted the
achievements of the administration in the past one year, broke down the
savings from the procurement reforms into N400 billion in 2012 and
N57.96 billion in the year 2013.
The government explained that it
embarked on the reforms to address the issues of contract costs
inflation, proliferation of projects, lack of procurement plans, poor
project prioritization, poor budgeting processes, lack of competition
and value for money in the award and execution of government contracts.
The report said: “Under the reform, all
contracts must be awarded through a due process laid down by the Bureau
of Public Procurement (BPP) including advertisement, pre-qualification,
invitation to tender, technical and financial bid process opening of
tenders and evaluation process, to determine the company/organization
that is best qualified for the contract.
“This reform is being sustained through
strong political and leadership support to the BPP which has resulted in
a gradual reduction in the cost of public expenditure and improved
competitiveness in the award of public contracts.”
To consolidate on the gains achieved on
the reforms, the report said that government has established the Public
Procurement Research Centre at the Federal University of Technology,
Owerri (FUTO) to support research on all aspects of public procurement
and related subjects and to implement training of procurement officers.
The BPP, the report, said also signed a
cooperation compact with the United Nations Office on Drug and Crime
(UNODC) late last year towards strengthening its anti-corruption efforts
in the country.
It also said that through the
cooperation of the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), the BPP in 2013
sent more than 50 companies to Independent Corrupt Practices Commission
(ICPC) for investigations for attempting to secure government contracts
with forged documents or made false claims about their competence and
capacity.
150 soldiers, Police Special Squad, hundreds of CJTF escort Shettima to Emir of Gwoza’s burial
The Late Emir of Gwoza, Alhaji Shehu Mustapha Idrisa Timta, who was
killed by Boko Haram gunmen on Friday was buried on Saturday amidst
tears.Though the first class monarch was killed while on his way to attend the burial of the
Emir of Gombe, Alhaji Shehu Abubakar, none of his colleagues from within and outside the state was able attend his interment due to unpredictable security situation on the way and around Gwoza town.
Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima, who was accompanied by his Deputy, Zanna Mustapha and Senator Muhammed Ali Ndume, an indigene of Gwoza, was the highest public officer at the burial.
Though Gwoza has been baldly affected by the ongoing Boko Haram insurgency that sacked many communities in the area, the burial was well attended by all kinds of sympathisers.
The crowded Islamic funeral was led by the Chief Imam of Gwoza, Alhaji Ibrahim Ahmad Bamanga.
Governor Shettima, who also battled to control his tears as he delivered his tribute and condolences, described late Shehu Idrissa Timta as “a man who spent better part of his reign preaching peace and tolerance.
“This is not a day for long speeches; it is a day of mourning of our late father and monarch. May Allah give us yet another monarch that will love his people in the manner Late Shehu Idrissa Timta did; in his life time he was being eulogized as one King that can keep a venomous viper in his pocket, because of his superlative love for peace and tolerance; he was known as a monarch who never showed discrepancy whether of religion or tribe. The late Emir has lived an exemplary life; he was a paragon of everything that is good in a leader”.
